For my second review of the year, I am continuing with the old-school rock & roll. After this, I will review some more modern artists and different genres.

Who’s Next is the fifth studio album by British rock band The Who, released in 1971. It developed from the aborted Lifehouse project. This was a multi-media rock opera conceived by guitarist and chief songwriter Pete Townsend as a follow-up to their 1969 rock opera Tommy. The project was ultimately too complex to complete, and was abandoned. However, 8 of the 9 songs on Who’s Next come from these sessions. The album doesn’t have a concept or story throughout.

The album is regarded as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. It features experimentation with synths, and more of a hard rock and arena rock feel than their 60s mod sound. It features the legendary tracks, “Baba O’Riley,” “Behind Blue Eyes” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” I believe that the album is a rare case where there is not a bad song for me, and it flows perfectly (the tracks are sequenced very well). From the powerful “Bargain” to the tuneful “Love Ain’t for Keeping,” I wouldn’t skip a song.

I think that the album is a great introduction to the massive rock sound the Who developed in the 70s, that would become a signature. However, I also think their earlier 60s mod sound is essential listening, and a sound I slightly prefer. Tracks such as “I Can’t Explain” and “Substitute” have a more poppy and bright feel than Who’s Next, with chiming guitars.

I also love the early look of the band, with their sharp clothes and haircuts (the mod look), rather than the long hair of the 70s era. Frontman Roger Daltrey, in particular, has kept this mod look throughout different stages of their career. This look and sound was very influential on British bands such as The Jam.

Overall, Who’s Next is a classic record that I think any rock fan would enjoy. It has a loud, yet melodic sound that still sounds fresh. The manic drumming of Keith Moon bursts from the speakers. In my opinion, it is a flawless rock album.

10/10

I definitely share your enthusiasm about “Who’s Next.” In fact, if I could pick only one album by The Who, this would be it!

That said I also agree their ’60s sound was great. Once again, with “Can’t Explain” and “Substitute,” you highlighted two of my favorites. A third one I really love is “I Can See For Miles” – and, of course, “My Generation”, “Pinball Wizard”, “The Kids Are Alight” – there are too many to mention! 🙂
