On Thursday 20th Nov, the music world lost another legend, Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the bassist for The Stone Roses. His groovy and funky sound was a key part of their distinctive style. For example, “I Wanna Be Adored” and “She Bangs The Drums” would not be the same without their iconic opening riffs.

He was also known as a very personable and down to earth guy. In his tribute, Richard Ashcroft from The Verve called him, “one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with.” Thus, here is a list of my favourite Stone Roses basslines from him.

  • I Wanna Be Adored
  • She Bangs The Drums
  • Waterfall
  • (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister
  • Made of Stone
  • Shoot You Down
  • Fools Gold (edit)
  • One Love (edit)
  • This Is The One
  • I Am The Resurrection (yes I basically included the whole debut album. The remaining track “Bye Bye Badman” also has mad bass work)

The songs in this list are all from the debut album and the classic Turns Into Stone compilation. I didn’t include anything from the second album Second Coming or his work with another famous 90s band, Primal Scream (whom he played with after the Roses until 2011). Even though he always added groovy licks, I don’t think there is anything as prominent and legendary as his basslines on these albums.

Overall, Mani was an integral part to the sound of The Stone Roses and they wouldn’t have been the same without him. He was a charismatic man who loved life. Rock in peace.

While the name The Stone Roses immediately rang a bell, I haven’t covered any of the group’s music to date, and I sadly cannot remember in which context I heard of them. That said, based on sampling most of the songs you highlighted, I definitely like what I’ve heard. I see at 63 years old, Mounfield was still young. It’s a pity!

Yes, you are from America? They didn’t have much success over there. I do want to do more classic rock soon as well, I like doing a mix.

I was born and grew up in Germany, and have lived in the U.S. for nearly 30 years – still have my German accent though!😆
