“We’re Onto Something” is the second collaboration of 2025 from 00s rock band Kings of Leon and current US country superstar Zach Bryan. The track comes hot off the heels of their recent collaboration “Bowery.” I thought this was a topical review to put out as Zach Bryan is one of the biggest figures in modern music at the moment, especially in the UK.

I wasn’t too keen on the recent song “Bowery.” The track has a generic chord progression which I am not fond of, and have never heard Kings of Leon use before. The track is Zach Bryan ft Kings of Leon and feels that way to me. Nonetheless, the track has the typical creative bass and rollicking guitar of the band and a nice chord progression in the pre-chorus.

Bowery also has fantastic, organic production which has been missing from the work of Kings of Leon for a while. Although their last album Can We Please Have Fun contains some of their most fiery work in a decade, such as the lead single “Mustang,” for me the production by Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus) completely sucks the life out of the songs. For example, the track “Nothing To Do” is one of their hardest rocking tracks to date, yet the snare drum is completely washed away in the mix.

The organic and rustic production of “Bowery” is continued on the new single “We’re Onto Something.” Spotify credits for the track say that it is actually produced by Kid Harpoon again. I much prefer the song to “Bowery” and it feels more Kings of Leon. The song has a pleasant major key chord progression, a signature for the band, with some quirky harmonica in the chorus. It does have a slight country twang from Bryan’s vocals and the slide guitar, but still sounds indie rock as well.

I also enjoy the bridge, with some fast drums and rapid-fire vocals. The vocal delivery and nonsensical lyrics of the section remind me of early Kings of Leon, which is always a good thing. In fact, in a recent video about the song, singer Caleb Followill said they were inspired by early tracks such as “King of The Rodeo.” The song then transitions back into the slow pace of the chorus.

Overall, this is a good collaboration by Kings of Leon and Zach Bryan. It does sound a bit like a country-fried track from their second album Aha Shake Heartbreak. Like Ringo Starr’s recent country album, it is very timely with the recent explosion of country music, of which Bryan is at the forefront.

Sadly, even with Zach Bryan’s name, the recent tracks don’t seem to be setting the charts alight. I hope the next Kings of Leon record isn’t full on country, with just a few tracks as they always do. However, I do hope they continue with the great production styles of the recent songs. I believe that the tracks might be a part of an EP with Bryan, which is a good idea.

I don’t dislike anything particularly about the song, so I suppose it’s a 10/10? Although I don’t think it will change the course of music!
